Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment Options

Introduction

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common nerve compression conditions affecting the hand and wrist. It occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel — a narrow passageway in the wrist.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger
  • Hand weakness or dropping objects
  • Symptoms worse at night or when driving, typing, or using tools

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

  • Repetitive wrist motion (typing, manual labour)
  • Inflammatory conditions like arthritis
  • Hormonal changes (e.g. pregnancy)
  • Previous wrist injury or fracture
  • Sometimes there’s no clear cause

Diagnosis & Treatment An orthopaedic assessment typically includes a physical exam, nerve conduction studies, and sometimes imaging.

Treatment Options Include:

  • Wrist splints – especially at night
  • Activity modification
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical release – a short procedure that relieves pressure on the nerve and often leads to excellent outcomes

Early intervention can prevent long-term nerve damage. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, book an appointment with Mr Richard Pennington to explore your options.
